Case Western Reserve University senior men's soccer player Zach Broujos (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Pittsburgh Central Catholic) was selected to receive one of the 58 prestigious Fall NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships awarded to fall sport athletes across all three divisions of the NCAA for their excellence both academically and athletically, along with their leadership and community involvement.
Broujos is the 25th CWRU athlete ever to win the scholarship, and the second in the history of the men's soccer program, along with Kevin Bigart in 2009.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship is awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically, and are in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition. The Association awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women. This season's NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients (29 men and 29 women) represent fall sports participants, who will receive one-time, nonrenewable grants of $7,500 to be used for graduate study. Men's fall sports sponsored by the NCAA include Cross Country, Football, Soccer and Water Polo.
Broujos was a key member of the Spartans' defense during his senior campaign in 2016, serving as a team captain. He is a two-time All-University Athletic Association honoree, earning a selection to the First Team this past season, after claiming an honorable mention as a junior, in addition to being named to the OCSA All-Ohio Third Team in 2016. He helped lead a defense that finished the year ranked 74th in Division III in goals against average (0.94), 21st in save percentage (.843) and 87th in shutout percentage (0.39), while limiting opponents to 13.8 shots and 6.4 shots on goal per game. Over the course of his career, he played in 69 games and made 66 starts, recording a goal and three assists for five points.
Academically, Broujos has a 3.781 cumulative grade point average as an accounting major with a minor in finance. He is a three-time UAA All-Academic honoree, while also earning Dean's List selection during his time at CWRU, and is on pace to claim a spot on the UAA Presidents' Scholar-Athlete Team this season.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports.
