From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics
The 21st-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory at home against Allegheny College on Monday, September 19 to improve its record to 6-0 on the season. The Gators fell to 2-4-1 on the year with the one-goal loss.
Junior Ryan Stinebaugh (Houston, Texas/Strake Jesuit College Prep) finished the Tartans' first goal in the ninth minute after the team moved the ball upfield from the defensive half. Sophomore Jack McCambridge (Bethlehem, Pa./Moravian Academy) received a pass from across the field, touched it toward the corner of the 18-yard box and then found sophomore Philip Petrakian (Redwood City, Calif./Sacred Heart Preparatory) to his left and near the end line. Petrakian sent a cross through the box to the far post where sophomore Zack Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove) put a header attempt on frame that was saved by Allegheny's keeper, Chris DeNelle, with an outstretched arm. Stinebaugh was then in position to finish the rebound for his first marker of the season.
The ball moved around from player-to-player and team-to-team for the majority of the game before the Tartans made it a two-goal advantage in the 66th minute.
A free kick just outside the 18-yard box on the left side of the goal was taken by senior Devin Keane(Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East). Keane put the pass to the near post where sophomore Greg Bellwoar (Devon, Pa./St. Joe's Prep) deflected it past the keeper for his second goal in as many games.
The Gators cut into the Tartans' lead in the 73rd minute after Nick Dias kicked in his own rebound that was saved by freshman keeper Jack Sampiere (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines). Dias's original attempt came after a long throw-in into the box by Liam McNamee. Sampiere was shielded but still managed to save the first attempt that glanced off Dias's shoulder. The save then hit the post and Dias was first to it to put it into the back of the net.
Allegheny's only other attempt late in the game came off a corner kick but McNamee's attempt was wide and the Tartans went on for the 2-1 win.
Sampiere made two saves for the game to notch his third win of the season.
