#23 Tartans Shut Out Bears, Win 3-0

From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics

The 23rd-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team defeated University Athletic Association (UAA) rival Washington University in St. Louis, 3-0, on Friday, October 28 at home. The Tartans are now 11-2-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the UAA as the Bears fall to 9-4-1 and 1-3-1.

The Tartans got on the board in the 21st minute after they were awarded a penalty kick. Sophomore Greg Bellwoar (Devon, Pa./St. Joe's Prep) scored off the saved pk which was taken by sophomore Zack Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill./Buffalo Grove). The play was awarded to the Tartans after Masciopinto's progress toward a pass forward by sophomore Jamie Wheaton (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) was stopped by a Bear defender.

Later in the first half, Masciopinto and Wheaton were the aggressors with Masciopinto scoring for the 10th time this season. Wheaton picked off a pass from a defender and with a 2-on-1 with him and Masciopinto, passed the ball across the box by the keeper and Masciopinto finished it for the two-goal advantage.

The last goal of the game came in the 50th minute off the head of Masciopinto. Sophomore Anthony Gulli (Warrenville, Ill./St. Joseph) got around a defender near the end line and chipped a pass back over the head of a defender. Masciopinto rose up over the keeper and deflected it with his head past the keeper for his team-leading 11th goal of the season.

Freshman Jack Sampiere (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) made one save in goal as the Tartans back line of sophomore Jack McCambridge (Bethlehem, Pa./Moravian Academy), Bellwoar, senior Andreas Fatschel (Seven Fields, Pa./Seneca Valley), and freshman John Painter (Bethlehem, Pa./Moravian Academy) along with defensive midfielder Jimmy Jameson (Fairfax, Va./Oakton) thwarted the Bear attack. Sampiere earned his fourth shutout of the season and seventh victory.
