Spartans Play to 1-1 Tie at Hiram

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Case Western Reserve University junior Michael Balog gave the Spartans a second-half lead with his first goal of the season, but a late goal by Hiram College evened the score, as the two teams played to a double-overtime 1-1 tie in Hiram, Ohio on Wednesday night.

With the tie, the Spartans' record moved to 2-2-1 on the year, while the Terriers now stand at 2-2-1 as well.  It was the first overtime game of the season for Case Western Reserve.

After a scoreless first half, Balog broke the scoreless tie in the 53rd minute, collecting a rebound after a shot by freshman Marques Manta was blocked, and sending a return shot past the Hiram keeper for his first goal of the season.

CWRU maintained the 1-0 lead until the 84th minute, when Hiram's Vaal Ngalla evened the score, converting a goal off a deflection in front of the net.

The score remained tied at a goal apiece through the rest of regulation, and neither squad would be able to strike for a 'golden goal' in overtime, giving each team its first draw of the campaign.

Balog and Manta each finished the game with a team-best three shots, while senior Joshua Prosser, senior Jacob Grindel, and sophomore Alex Besl each registered a pair of shots, as the Spartans finished the game with a 14-12 edge in total shots.  Senior goalkeeper Thomas Nolan made four saves during the contest.
