Spartans Shut Out Mount Union 3-0 in Season Opener

Senior forward Joshua Prosser led the Spartans scoring two goals as the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team earned a 3-0 win versus the University of Mount Union in their 2016 season-opener.

The two-score game was the first multiple goal game in Prosser's career.

CWRU began its their scoring with a goal in the 25th minute when sophomore midfielder Paul Darmstadter scored off of a header via a cross from junior defender Jack Rademacher.

The scored remained 1-0 until the second half, when the Spartans padded their lead with two more unanswered goals against the Purple Raiders. Just 3:18 into the second, Prosser went down the field and redirected a long pass from senior midfielder Jacob Grindel sending a wide angle shot past the keeper. Prosser struck for his second goal of the game off an assist from freshman defender Taylor Hosley in the 80th minute.

Overall, CWRU outshot Mount Union 13-4, including an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks. Prosser and Darmstadter led the way with four shots apiece.

Senior Thomas Nolan earned the win in goal, making one save during a scoreless first half, while junior Calvin Boyle completed the clean sheet with 45 minutes in the second half.

The Spartans have now won four of their last six season opening games, dating back to the 2011 season.
