From Case Western Reserve University Athletics
The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team played to a 0-0 double-overtime tie against the first-ranked University of Chicago on Senior Night at DiSanto Field.
The tie brings the Spartans to 5-7-4 overall and 0-2-3 in the UAA, while the Maroons suffer their first tie of the season and move to 15-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the UAA.
Junior goalkeeper Calvin Boyle went the distance and made seven saves throughout the match. He now has recorded five shutouts this season and moves to 3-6-3.
The two teams played to a scoreless tie in regulation, with Chicago holding an edge in total shots, 15-6. Junior forward Michael Balog had the team's best shot at a goal in regulation, heading a ball in 80th minute that was saved by Chicago keeper Hill Bonin.
In overtime, the Spartans best chance of a goal came in the 105th minute, when Balog launched a ball from 20 yards out that was saved by Bonin.
Prior to the start of the game, the team recognized its six graduating senior players – defender Zach Broujos, goalkeeper Frank Candau, midfielder Jacob Grindel, goalkeeper Thomas Nolan, forward Joshua Prosser and defender Rusheel Shah – who were each playing in the penultimate home game of the their collegiate careers. Together the group has lead a resurgence in the program during their time on campus, including 18 wins over the previous two seasons. With their contributions, the team has reached as high as #15 nationally in the D3soccer.com Top 25. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has also recognized the program regionally and nationally during two of their four seasons. In addition, the team has excelled academically, earning the NSCAA Team Academic Award in each of their four seasons at CWRU.
