Emory Earns Road Win Over Berry, 2-1

From Emory University Athletics

The Emory University Men's Soccer team improved to 3-2 on the season Friday night as the Eagles knocked off regional foe Berry College, 2-1, at Ford Field in Mount Berry, Georgia.

Junior Cody Gardiner opened the scoring in the 31st minute as he scored the first goal of his career. Gardiner found the back of the net on a header following a well-placed ball on a corner kick from sophomore Moustafa Khattab.

The Vikings (4-2) evened the score at 1-1 in the 51st minute as Steven Moore played the ball off his chest and one timed it through junior Jake Deuel's five-hole on the feed from Graham Wall.

Moore had a chance to give Berry the lead with 24 minutes remaining with a shot on target but Deuel made a great diving save to preserve the tie. Two minutes later, the Eagles had an opportunity of their own as junior Adam Ferguson had a blistering shot on net but Berry's Carson Oakes made the nice stop to keep the score knotted at one.

Junior Jason McCartney broke the tie in the 72nd minute as he found the back of the net for the third time this season. Following a nice pass from Khattab, McCartney was able to turn and sneak his shot past Oakes to give Emory the 2-1 lead they would not relinquish.

Deuel, making his first career start in goal on Friday, played all 90 minutes and had two stops en route to collecting the first win of his career. Oakes was handed the loss, making one save and allowing one tally in his 45 minutes of action.

The teams were evenly matched on the evening as the Eagles had a slight advantage in shots, 13-11, including a 9-4 edge in shots on goal. McCartney and classmate Christian Meyer led the way with three shots, two on goal, for Emory.
