Emory Celebrates Senior Day with Double OT Win Over Case Western Reserve

From Emory University Athletics

Junior Gabriel Vasconcelos lifted the Emory University Men's Soccer team over Case Western Reserve University on Friday night at the Woodruff PE Center, scoring the golden goal in the second overtime period to give the Eagles the 2-1 victory over the Spartans. Emory has now won three straight to improve to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in the University Athletic Association. Case Western Reserve drops to 4-7-2 and 0-2-1 in UAA play.

Vasconcelos scored the game winner in the 103rd minute, one timing a shot off the pass from classmate Michael Carragher through traffic towards the net. His shot redirected off a Spartan defender and into the back of the net to give Emory the one goal victory. The goal was Vasconcelos's first of his career.

Sophomore Moustafa Khattab opened the scoring in the 26th minute, beating the Case Western Reserve goalkeeper from close range to the far post. The goal was Khattab's fourth of the season. Junior Jason McCartney had an assist on the play to increase his UAA lead to seven helpers on the year.

The Spartans evened the score at 1-1 right before halftime as Jacob Grindel headed in a pass off the feed from Brian Woo with 52 seconds remaining in the opening half.

The Eagles outshot CWRU 21-11 in the contest including an 11-6 mark in shots on goal. Khattab led all players with five shots, four on goal.

Before the start of the game, Emory honored its two seniors – Scott Haley and Jason Andrejchak with a special on-field ceremony.
