The Emory University men's soccer team notched its first win of the season Sunday evening, defeating Maryville College in the final game of the Sonny Carter Invitational. The Eagles evened their mark at 1-1 following a 2-0 triumph over the Scots who slipped to 1-1.

Emory made the most of a Maryville miscue in the waning seconds of the opening half when sophomore Michael Stier pounced on a lazy kick from the Maryville goalkeeper about 35 yards out, and then proceeded to move forward before dishing a nifty pass to senior Jason Andrejchak just outside the box. Andrejchak then took a couple of dribbles before depositing a shot in the upper right of the Scots to goal with just 18 ticks on the clock to give Emory a 1-0 edge heading into the break.

The Eagles got some breathing room at the 58:43 when junior Jason McCartney, who after being robbed twice earlier in the game, converted a nice touch pass from Gabe Vasconcelos just inside the box to record his first marker of the young campaign.

Emory finished the game with 17 shot attempts compared to Maryville's 13. The Scots' Ryan Jorgenson made eight stops in goal while Emory freshman Jonathan Whyte recorded one save, that coming with 10:50 left in the game when he stopped a direct kick by MC's Thomas Palmer.

Emory finished second in the Invitational to the University of Texas-Tyler who finished with a 2-0 record. The Patriots bested Oglethorpe University, 2-1, on Sunday.
