NYU Tops CWRU, 2-1, in UAA Opener

From NYU Athletics

In their University Athletic Association (UAA) opener, the New York University men's soccer team defeated Case Western Reserve University by a score of 2-1 on Saturday, October 1, at DiSanto Field in Cleveland, OH.

"It was huge to win a UAA match on the road," said Head Coach Kim Wyant. "We got more organized as the match went on, especially at the start of the second half."

Despite being outshot 9-0 in the first half, the Violets did not concede a goal. The match remained scoreless until 62:46 when Drew Enyedi got his head to a Ricardo Mitrano corner kick and fired it into the back of the net to give NYU the lead.

However, the Violets failed to maintain their lead as CWRU equalized at 65:22.

"We lost our composure a bit and gave up a really sloppy goal," continued Wyant. "We've got to be more mentally strong when we get leads and learn how to hold them."

The teams traded shots with no breakthrough until Owen Smith finished off a loose ball in the box from another Mitrano corner at 86:09, which was the winning goal for the Violets.

"At 1-1 we were playing good soccer. We moved Owen to the outside forward spot with about 15 minutes left and he was dangerous every time he touched the ball," explained Wyant. "It was an excellent delivery by Ricardo."

FYI...

- The Violets were outshot 17-7 and trailed 5-3 in shots on goal.

- Smith led NYU with three shots, including two on goal.

- Lucas Doucette recorded four key saves for NYU, including a fingertip save under a minute into the second half.
