A second-half goal explosion by University of Chicago men's soccer turned a tight affair into a 6-2 rout of Carthage College on Tuesday night.

The No. 3-ranked Maroons (10-0 record) totaled their most goals in a game since beating Knox College 6-2 on Sept. 2, 2014. The No. 19-ranked Red Men fell to 7-3.

An action-packed first half featured four goals combined in the opening 29 minutes. The hosts broke into the scoring column only five minutes into the contest, as a corner kick led directly to a header goal. UChicago found an answer 14 minutes in via its sophomore forwards when Max Lopez netted the equalizer off an assist by Matthew Koh. The duo struck again at the 24:35 mark with the identical result of a Lopez goal and a Koh assist to put the visitors ahead 2-1. Lopez leads the Maroons with 10 goals on the season.

However, Carthage hung in and tied the score at 28:18. The match remained even at 2-2 heading into the halftime break. Coming into Tuesday, UChicago had only allowed one goal through nine games.

The Red Men took the first three shots of the second half. But once the 68th minute rolled around, the Maroons put on a show of offensive execution that put the match's result to bed. With one tick under 68 minutes, freshman forward Dayo Adeosun netted his fourth goal of the year with an assist to freshman midfielder Gary Zhao. Five minutes later, it was Lopez who set up Koh for a score to put them ahead 4-2. Then at the 76 minute mark, junior midfielder Andre Abedian put away his fourth goal with double assists to Lopez and Koh. Senior forward Brenton Desai ended the onslaught with his third tally of the year at 81:02. Zhao was the assister once more.

All told, UChicago led shots 12-9 and corner kicks 5-4 at the match's conclusion. Junior goalkeeper Hill Bonin allowed two goals and made three saves to improve his season record to 10-0.
