Maroons Fly Past NYU 5-0

From University of Chicago Athletics

An offensive outburst in the second half helped the University of Chicago men's soccer team blitz New York University 5-0 on Sunday.

The No. 1-ranked Maroons (14-0 overall, 4-0 UAA) recorded their second-highest goal total of the season. The Violets dropped to 5-6-2 overall and 1-3 in the University Athletic Association (UAA).

NYU put a shot on goal only 35 seconds into the game which was saved by junior goalkeeper Hill Bonin. After a long stretch without much action, UChicago benefitted from an NYU own goal off a bouncing ball in the box 17:39 into the match. The Maroons took that 1-0 lead into halftime.

The second half saw a more aggressive UChicago side capitalize on its opportunities. In the 56th minute, senior forward Brenton Desai was set up by sophomore forward Max Lopez for a straight-on blast to the upper left of the net. Desai tallied his fourth goal in the past five games. Just under two minutes later, it was Lopez who finished a strike with assists by Desai and sophomore forward Matthew Koh to make the score 3-0.

The Maroons earned a free kick in the 63rd minute that Lopez struck quickly before the defense set itself and scored easily. His 12 goals rank first on this season's squad. The day's final tally came in the 74th minute. Freshman midfielder Gary Zhao received a pass from senior defender George Voulgaris on a run at goal, and the freshman expertly chipped the goalie from 20 yards to push the advantage to 5-0.

Bonin (14-0) earned his 10th shutout of the season, making three saves in 90 minutes between the pipes. In the process, he tied UChicago's career shutout record with 22. UChicago outshot NYU 16-4 with an 8-1 lead in corner kicks.
