The University of Chicago men's soccer team tallied two first-half goals and maintained control to beat Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology 2-0 on Saturday.

The No. 4-ranked Maroons (9-0 record) picked up their eighth shutout of the campaign. The Fightin' Engineers (4-5) lost for the fifth-straight time.

With the visitors packed behind the ball, UChicago possessed all throughout the first half and continually put together scoring chances. The Maroons outshot the Engineers 12-0 in the opening 45 minutes, and twice came away with goals in that time frame.

In the 15th minute, senior forward Brenton Desai snagged a bouncing ball mishit by Rose-Hulman and quickly touched to fellow forward Max Lopez. The sophomore moved to his left foot and struck a brilliant ball from 17 yards that pinged off the right post and in for his eighth goal. Lopez has scored in four-straight matches.

A Rose-Hulman foul in the 23rd minute gave UChicago a dangerous free kick outside the right edge of the box on the goal line. Sophomore midfielder Nicco Capotosto crossed right to the foot of on-rushing junior midfielder Andre Abedian, who directed the one-timer past the goalie for his third tally of the year.

The run of play deteriorated after halftime for both sides. Inaccurate passing turned the ball over frequently as momentum waxed and waned. The Engineers had two opportunities with an open goal available, but no forwards were in the area to corral the ball and the Maroons booted it out to safety. The score remained 2-0 up through the final horn.

The Maroons submitted a dominating statistical performance with an 18-1 lead in shots and a 10-2 advantage on corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Hill Bonin (9-0) set a new career-high with his eighth shutout – he previously collected seven shutouts in 2014.
