Penalty Kick Gives Chicago Overtime Win Against Texas-Dallas

From University of Chicago Athletics

A yellow and red filled match ended in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon when Andre Abedian converted an overtime penalty kick to lift University of Chicago men's soccer to a 1-0 win over University of Texas-Dallas.

The No. 23-ranked Maroons improved to 2-0 on the season and the Comets fell to 0-2.

With the sun shining brightly on the Stagg Field grass, UChicago controlled the action throughout the match. Defenders communicated effectively and worked in concert to shutdown UTD's chances. The visitors were held to a couple dangerous rushes on goal and junior goalkeeper Hill Bonin sniffed out the best opportunity for his lone save of the day in the 71st minute.

A casual showing in the first half by the Maroon offense left the game scoreless heading into halftime. Sophomore forward Max Lopez made the biggest impact with three shots on target in the first half and four overall in the match. When the second half commenced, UChicago emerged with more purpose and energy. The home side's speed and athleticism put the Comets back on their heels, resulting in 22 fouls drawn.

Chippy play in the second half was rewarded with cautions from the referee. After two yellow cards were given to the visitors earlier in the half, UChicago found itself playing a man down after a red card ejection at the 71:48 mark. Despite the disadvantage, the Maroons continued their solid play and even strung together several effective counterattacks. With the storm nearly weathered and the final minutes ticking away, the field was evened once more when the Comets picked up a straight red card in the 87th minute.

The two sides headed into overtime still knotted at 0-0. Then in the 100th minute, UChicago broke free for a one-on-one chance in the goalie box. UTD's sliding takedown in close was immediately whistled and a penalty kick was awarded to the Maroons. Abedian stepped to the line and the junior midfielder buried the shot to give his team the 1-0 triumph.

For the match, UChicago led the shots category 15-6, including 8-1 in shots on goal. Sophomore forward Matthew Koh contributed five shots with three on frame. Corner kicks went 5-0 in the Maroons' favor. Bonin improved to 2-0 with his second-straight shutout.
