Immaculate defense and athletic plays on offense gave the University of Chicago men's soccer team a handy 2-0 win against Wheaton College on Tuesday evening.

The No. 4-ranked Maroons (5-0 record) have now shut out five-straight opponents – the longest streak in program history. The Thunder dropped to 1-3-1.

From the onset, Wheaton controlled possession for 10-15 minutes. But once UChicago rounded into form, the hosts never let the Thunder back into the match. Maroon defenders poked the ball away on every opportunity and cut off passing lanes to prevent any real build up. Wheaton's offense ground to a halt as UChicago set the pace on the opposite end of the pitch.

In the 27th minute, the Maroons strung together a laudable sequence from the back line. Freshman defender Sam Drablos started off from the back right and found sophomore forward Max Lopez all alone in the middle of the field. Lopez turned and powered up the field to the edge of the attacking third. As soon as pressure arrived, he punched the ball through a middle crease between two defenders to spring freshman midfielder Gary Zhao, who turned on the jets to get behind the defense. Zhao went one-on-one with the goalkeeper and buried the shot top shelf right.

The second tally came right away after halftime in the 48th minute. Freshman forward/midfielder David McBroom, who had two assists in his last match versus North Park University, delivered an arcing left-footed ball to the top of the attack. Senior forward Brenton Desai locked on the trajectory, cut inside his defender to intercept the pass and dribbled into the box before beating the oncoming goalie left.

UChicago finished with a 10-3 shot advantage and a 4-1 corner kick lead. Junior goalkeeper Hill Bonin (5-0) did not face a shot on goal as the Maroon defenders snuffed out almost every chance that arose.
