The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team kept its NCAA hopes alive with a 2-1 win at Case Western Reserve University Sunday in Cleveland.
WashU snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 10-4-1 and 2-3-1 in the University Athletic Association (UAA), while Case Western Reserve dropped to 5-8-4, 0-3-3 in the UAA.
"It was good to get the one-goal lead and keep it," said WashU head coach Joe Clarke. "The guys were devastated after Friday's loss, and came back motivated today. They are determined to stay alive in the playoff race."
WashU outshot Case 12-8, while the Spartans had a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior Kevin Goon gave the Bears a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute after he took a cross from freshman Ben Strozewski and flicked it to the upper left corner. The goal for Goon was his first of the season and sixth of his career.
WashU outshot Case 6-5 in the first half.
Zachary Broujos scored in the 83rd minute to break up the shutout.
Senior Nick Tannenbaum (8-3-1) made three saves and picked up the win in goal.
WashU celebrates Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 5, against No. 1-ranked University of Chicago (16-0-1, 5-0-1 UAA). Game time is set for 7 p.m.
BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Case 26-4, and the Bears have won the last two meetings … The Bears have recorded 10 or more win in 16 of 20 years under Clarke … The game-winning goal for Sproule was his fifth of the season, second most in the UAA … The win for Clarke was the 432nd of his career, tied for 25thmost in men's college soccer history … WashU won its first game this season when allowing a goal.
