Second-Half Surge Lifts No. 17 Bears Past No. 16 Luther

From Washington University Athletics

The No. 17-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team scored four second-half goals as the Bears posted a 4-0 win over No. 16 Luther College Sunday at Francis Field in St. Louis.

The shutout for WashU was its fourth of the season. The Bears are the only remaining team in NCAA Division III who have yet to give up a goal in 2016.

Senior goalkeeper Nick Tannenbaum made a career-high five saves en route to posting the second shutout of his career. Tannenbaum's fifth save of the game was his biggest, as he dove to his left to deflect a shot by Nigel Nielsen out of bounds for a corner kick.

WashU improved to 4-0 with the win, while Luther suffered its first loss and dropped to 4-1-2. WashU is off to a 4-0 start for the first time since 2011.

The Bears had a 7-5 shot advantage in the opening half, putting four on frame. Sophomore Ryan Sproule had the best opportunity for the Bears, but his breakaway attempt went over the crossbar.

Tannenbaum made a pair of saves in the opening 45 minutes for WashU.

WashU scored early and often in the second half. Sproule netted a goal for the third-straight contests on a give and go with sophomore Marc Vandenberg in the 49th minute to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

Senior Corey Meehan and graduate student Jack West sored a pair of goals in a span of 3:11 to quickly extend the lead to 3-0. Meehan's goal was the first of his career. In the 70th minute, junior Kevin Maedomari cleaned up a shot from Vandenberg for the fourth goal of the half.

WashU outshot Luther 17-13 for the half, and the Norse had a 6-4 advantage in corner kicks.

WashU closes out a three-game homestand against Illinois Wesleyan University (3-3-1) on Friday, Sept. 23. Game time is set for 7 p.m., and will be broadcast live on the Bear Sports Network.
