Bears Blank Principia for Ninth Shutout

The No. 22-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team posted is ninth-shutout of the season in a 6-0 win over Principia College Thursday at Francis Field in St. Louis.

WashU improved to 9-2-1 with the win, while Principia fell to 5-9.

Senior goalkeeper Nick Tannenbaum (7-1-1) picked up the win in goal as the WashU defense did not allow a shot.

The Bears outshot Principia 29-0 and had an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Sophomore Ryan Sproule scored in the 11th minute to give WashU the early 1-0 advantage. Sproule took a pass from senior Grant Baltes and finished a give and go with a shot inside the box.

The goal for Sproule was his team-leading fifth of the season and 12th of his career.

Sophomore Marc VandenBerg pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 35th minute after he headed home a cross from freshman Isaac Plutzer to the far corner. The goal for Vandenberg was the fifth of his career.

WashU had a 10-0 in shot advantage in the first half.

Baltes picked up his second assist of the game in the 57th minute when he sent a corner kick inside the box that junior Shadi Awad headed into the back of the net. The goal for Awad was the second of his career.

Senior Noah Lieberman scored in the 69th minute to make it 4-0, and then VandenBerg and junior Kevin Maedomari scored to round out the scoring.

WashU plays its final non-conference game at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (12-4-3) on Sunday, Oct. 23. Game time is set for Noon in Whitewater, Wis.

BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series between the two teams 44-6-1, including victories in each of the last six meetings … WashU has shutout nine of 12 opponents this season … The game-winning goal for Sproule was his fourth of the year, second most in the University Athletic Association (UAA).
