Ryan Sproule’s Header Leads No. 17 Bears Past Wheaton

Sophomore Ryan Sproule scored the lone goal of the match in the first half as the No. 17-ranked Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team posted a 1-0 win over Wheaton College (Ill.) on a rain soaked Francis Field Friday in St. Louis.

Head coach Joe Clarke picked up career win No. 425 in his illustrious career, moving into 30thplace all-time in men's college soccer history. Clarke is 220-99-43 in 20 seasons at WashU and 425-173-73 in 34 years as a head coach.

WashU controlled play most of the first half in a downpour of rain and took the 1-0 lead in the 37th minute after Sproule headed home a corner kick from graduate student Jack West to make it 1-0. The goal for Sproule was his second of the season and ninth of his career.

Senior Nick Tannenbaum made his first start of the season in goal and made one save to preserve the first shutout of his career. Tannenbaum's lone save came in the 64th minute when Andrew Wade tried to chip him from the left wing.

WashU had a 9-6 advantage in shots and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.

WashU hosts No 16-ranked Luther College Sunday, Sept. 18, at 1:30 p.m.
