Brandeis Breaks Down MIT, 3-1

Brandeis Breaks Down MIT, 3-1

From Brandeis University Athletics

The Brandeis men's soccer team won its second straight match tonight by scoring three times in a seven-minute span to defeat MIT, 3-1, on Gordon Field. With the win, the Judges, ranked No. 15 in Division III by the United Soccer Coaches and No. 18 by D3soccer.com, improve to 8-2 on the season, while MIT falls to 4-4-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • You Got Lucky: Brandeis opened the scoring on an own goal, as sophomore back Dylan Hennessy (New York, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) sent a long free kick into the box, where it was headed by an MIT defender and into the back of the net for an own goal in the 39th minute.
  • Learning To Fly: In the 43rd minute, Hennessey notched the game-winning goal as he took a feed from senior Bernardo Ponte (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge and Latin) and chipped it over the keeper.
  • Built To Last: Just 31 seconds before halftime, the Judges built the lead to 3-0 as junior Andrew Allen (Norfolk, Mass. / King Phillip Regional) did some nice work to elude two defenders and found classmate Joshua Handler (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) wide open with a short pass. Handler converted for his third goal of the season.
  • You Wreck Me: MIT ruined Brandeis's chance at a shutout with a goal in the 80th minute when rookie Loukas Carayannopoulos (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) launched a screamer from 20 yards out into the upper 90.
  • Don't Come Around Here No More: Brandeis sophomore Greg Irwin (Passaic, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) made his first start for the Judges and had a tremendous diving save on Carayannopouos in the 88th minute to maintain the two-goal lead.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • I Won't Back Down: The Judges outshot MIT, 18-8, and had a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
  • Two Gunslingers: Irwin had four saves in the winning effort, while MIT sophomore Jeremy Cowham (Quincy, Mass./Milton Academy) had three stops in defeat.
  • This Old Town: This was the 61st meeting between Brandeis and MIT, the second-longest rivalry in Judges' history. Brandeis now leads, 33-24-4.
