From Carnegie Mellon University Athletics

The 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University men's soccer team hosted Penn State Behrend on Tuesday, October 3 and defeated the Lions, 2-1. The Tartans improve to 8-1-1 while the Lions fall to 8-4.

For the second straight game and third time this season the Tartans opened the scoring in the first five minutes of play when sophomore Jacob Moskowitz headed in a corner kick by junior Anthony Gulli (Warrenville, Ill. / St. Joseph) with 3:55 gone by. The goal was the first career score for Moskowitz.

Junior Zack Masciopinto (Arlington Heights, Ill. / Buffalo Grove) put in his seventh goal of the season in the 59th minute, giving the Tartans a two-goal advantage. Leading up to the score was a high pass across the box by sophomore Nicolas Poveda (Miami, Fla. / Coral Gables) to senior Ryan Stinebaugh (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit College Prep) who touched a pass back to Masciopinto who fired a one-timer for the score.

The Lions cut the deficit in half 32 seconds later with a goal by Richard Blanchard. A clearance attempt by the defense deflected back towards the Tartan goal and bounced off the top of the crossbar and fell into play where Blanchard rushed the net for the finish.

The Tartans put six other shots on goal but they were turned away by Chris Ralph in goal for the Lions.

Junior Alec Lam (Upper Saddle River, N.J. / Northern Highlands Regional) earned his eighth victory of the season, making three saves for the game.
