Spartans' Offense Erupts in Win Over Brooklyn

Sophomore midfielder Zachary Senft and freshman forward Seldon Magruder each scored two goals as the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team erupted for a 10-0 win over Brooklyn College on Saturday night at DiSanto Field.

The shutout is the second of the Spartans 2017 season as the team improves to 2-1-1 on the season, while Brooklyn dropped to 1-2-1 for the 2017 campaign.

The 10 goals scored by the Spartans sets a new program record. The previous record was set in 2015 against Waynesburg.

Sophomore defender Nicholas Bertrand opened the scoring in the first half, beginning in just the second minute of play as he headed in his first goal of the 2017 season. Senft struck for the next two goals as he found the back of the net off a corner at the 19th minute and then scored in the 22nd minute of play. To send the Spartans into halftime up 5-0, sophomore midfielder Garrett Winter took a cross from freshman midfielder Maximillian Klemm at the 26:14 mark, and then Magruder received a pass in the middle of the field from freshman Connor Weber in the 30th minute put the Spartans up 5-0.

In the second half, CWRU recorded a goal in the 48th when junior midfielder Jacob Phillips found the back of the net for his first goal of the season. Senior forward Michael Balog then converted a penalty kick at the 50:04 mark for his second goal of the season. The Spartans final three goals from junior Alex Besl, Magruder and sophomore Brian Woo to secure the 10-0 victory.

In net, senior Calvin Boyle played the first 45 minutes of the match and recorded three saves. Senior Christian Grimme took over in the beginning of the second half and made one save in his 35 minutes of action, while freshman Andrew Engelmeyer closed out last ten minutes of the game in goal. Boyle earned the win and improves to 2-1-1 on the season.

CWRU outshot the Bulldogs 33-8 and held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
