Alex Besl’s Late Goal the Difference-Maker in CWRU Win Over Marietta

Case Western Reserve University junior Alex Besl scored the game-winning goal on a 74th-minute strike to lead the Spartans to a 2-1 victory over Marietta College at DiSanto Field on Saturday afternoon.

The win raised CWRU's record to 3-2-1 for the year, while the Pioneers dropped to 4-1-1.

Marietta's Tom Sloan put the Pioneers on the board early in the first half, scoring an unassisted goal at the 9:46 mark. The Spartans responded less than three minutes later with an unassisted goal by Besl, his first of the game, at the 12:33 mark. The goal was Besl's second on the campaign.

Case Western Reserve outshot Marietta 7-4 in the first half, with a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

The second half remained fairly even between the two schools, with each side exchanging shots. Freshman midfielder Maximillian Klemm then delivered a perfect pass to Besl at the 74:38 mark to give CWRU a 2-1 lead. Besl's second goal of the game was his third on the season.

The Spartans outshot the Pioneers 17-10 for the game, including a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal. CWRU also attempted six more corner kicks than Marietta.

Senior goalkeeper Calvin Boyle went the distance and made six saves throughout the game. He improved to 3-2-1 on the season.
