CWRU Defeats NYU 5-1 in UAA Road Opener

Freshman forward Seldon Magruder and senior forward Michael Balog each scored two goals as the Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team defeated New York University, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, New York.

The victory gives CWRU its first win in conference play this season and boosts its overall record to 5-5-2. With the loss, NYU drops to 6-3-1 overall and 0-2-0 in conference play.

The Violets opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Maxi Rodriguez chipped in his fifth tally of the season. Thirteen minutes later, sophomore midfielder Zachary Senft evened the game at 1-1 when junior Alex Besl flicked a ball into the box to Senft who headed it past the NYU keeper. The Spartans gained the lead five minutes later when freshman Connor Weber chipped a ball into the box where senior Jack Rademacher deflected the pass to Magruder who scored the goal.

CWRU added to their lead in the second half, as Balog scored both of his goals off of assists by Senft. Balog's first goal came at the 57:53 mark and then scored his second goal less than a minute later at the 58:42 mark. The Spartans wrapped up their scoring in the 64th minute when Magruder scored his second goal of the game after sophomore Brian Woo dribbled in and made a pass thru the box to Magruder who found the back of the net to secure the Spartan victory.

For the game, CWRU outshot NYU, 17-9, and also held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Calvin Boyle earned the win and made four saves throughout the match.
