Moustafa Khattab's Second Half Tally Sends Emory Men's Soccer Through to Round of 16

From Emory University Athletics

Junior Moustafa Khattab's goal in the 72nd minute was the difference maker as the Emory University Men's Soccer program advanced to the NCAA Division III Round of 16 with a 1-0 victory over 14th-ranked Lynchburg College Sunday evening in Lynchburg, VA.

The win sends the Eagles to their third Sweet 16 appearance in program history and first since 2008. Emory (14-5-1) will face either No.-2 ranked Trinity (TX) or No-18 Mary Hardin-Baylor with the date and location to be determined. Lynchburg sees its 16-match unbeaten streak snapped, ending the season with an 18-2-2 overall record.

Khattab broke the defensive stalemate with his strike from the top corner of the 18, firing in the go-ahead marker to the opposite post. The score was Khattab's eighth of the year and fifth that acted as as a game-winner.

The Toronto native almost doubled the lead three minutes later on a free kick from 30 yards out but LC's Dylan McLaurin kept the ball from crossing the goal line with an acrobatic save.

The Hornets applied pressure in the waning minutes as Ben Mackey had a shot go just over the crossbar in the 85' and Fredy Flores produced a header on a corner kick in the 87' but his attempt sailed high.

The Eagles' defensive unit played tremendously throughout the 90 minutes to record their ninth shutout. Emory blocked six shots total, holding Lynchburg to four shots on goal with none coming in the second half. Freshman Cole Gallagher made four saves to record his sixth clean sheet and improved to 10-4-1 overall.
