Emory University Athletics Director Dr. Michael Vienna has announced Cory Greiner's appointment as head men's soccer coach.
Greiner was named the Eagles' Interim Head Coach in mid-August, following the resignation of Sonny Travis who assumed the athletic director duties at Coe College.
Under his guidance, the 2017 edition of Emory men's soccer enjoyed a memorable season, highlighted by a berth in the Elite Eight of the NCAA D-III Tournament for just the second time in school history and its first appearance since 1988. Greiner directed the team to a 15-5-2 overall record while facing the fourth toughest schedule in Division III, and was ranked eighth in the final United Soccer Coaches National Rankings, the highest-ever position an Emory team has finished in the poll. The squad's 15 victories tied the school's second-highest season win total. mory posted a 4-2-1 record and finished tied for third in the nation's strongest conference, the University Athletic Association. The UAA saw four teams qualify and advance to the Round of Eight in 2017.
Greiner coached senior Jason McCartney to Third Team All-America honors, while McCartney and junior Moustafa Khattab garnered All-South Region accolades as selected by the United Soccer Coaches. Greiner also saw McCartney and Khattab land First Team All-UAA recognition, with juniors Tyler Santee and Aidan Datené being chosen to the second team.
"Cory made the most of his opportunity this past season and I am extremely pleased to be able to name him full-time coach," Dr. Vienna stated. "Emory soccer reached heights it had not seen in nearly 30 years and Cory's leadership, recruiting skills and coaching acumen played a big role in that success. He is highly thought of, both within the Emory community and soccer circles, and we look forward to many successful seasons with him at the helm of the program."
Greiner originally joined the men's soccer staff as an assistant coach in August of 2013, where he helped the Eagles' compile a 43-20-7 overall record along with a berth to the 2014 NCAA Tournament.
"First off, I would like to personally thank Dr. Vienna for trusting me to be the next Head Men's Soccer Coach at Emory University," Greiner said. "I really enjoyed the process and it's been a pleasure to have the support of everyone in the athletic department and Campus Life here at Emory going back the last five seasons when I joined the University. I am honored and looking forward to leading a bright future with the Emory Men's Soccer Program."
Prior to arriving at Emory, Greiner served as the Technical Director of the SOCA Soccer Club in Charlottesville, Virginia, (2009-13). Among his duties included the coaching of elite youth boys teams (U10-U19), the implementation of a year-round player development model, and the oversight and management of all camps and clinics.
As a player, Greiner was a four-year starter at Virginia Commonwealth University (1999-2002) and helped the Rams to NCAA Division I Tournament berths in 1999 and 2002.
He earned his bachelor's degree from VCU in sport management with a business minor in 2003.
