NYU Wins in Overtime Over NJCU

From NYU Athletics

The New York University men's soccer team defeated New Jersey City University 3-2 in double overtime on Tuesday, October 3, at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, NY.

NYU ended a two-game losing skid and improved to 6-2-1 on the season, while NJCU fell to 4-5-2.

"It was good to get a victory after two losses," said NYU Head Coach Kim Wyant. "With that said, we made it a lot tougher than we had to."

Maxi Rodriguez opened up the scoring for the Violets, knocking a cross from Pedro Goldberg into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season 11:26 into the contest.

The score remained 1-0 through halftime, but the visitors scored twice in a 10-minute span to go ahead 2-1. Ron Jones scored at 48:15 to tie the game and Theo Sanoh found the back of the net 9:30 later to put the Gothic Knights in front.

"We got off to a slow start in the second half," admitted Wyant. "But we regained our composure and battled back."

Less than four minutes after NJCU took the lead, Robert Shellow beat NJCU goalkeeper Eric Lopes Silva to tie the game at two apiece. Shellow's third goal of the season came off a set piece as Rodriguez crossed the ball into the box and Shellow deflected it in with his head.

After a scoreless first overtime period, Matteo Schlitz scored the game-winner with 3:41 remaining in the second overtime frame. Schlitz headed in a corner kick from Ricardo Mitrano to give the Violets a 3-2 come-from-behind victory.

"Ricardo sent in a great, low cross there, and Matteo did a great job to get free and get a piece of it," added Wyant.

Lopes Silva made 11 saves for the Gothic Knights, while NYU goalkeeper Grant Engel made five to earn his sixth win of the season.
