11 UAA Men's Soccer Student-Athletes Earn Academic All-District Recognition

Eleven UAA soccer student-athletes were named to the 2017 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District® Men's Soccer Team, which recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.

Academic All-District recipients must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at their current institution.

First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be announced in December.

UAA Honorees

Emory University (3):

Emory University seniors Georges Daoud, Jason McCartney and Cody Gardiner have been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Men's Soccer team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

McCartney makes his second consecutive appearance on the CoSIDA Academic All-District team with an outstanding senior season. McCartney leads the Eagles with career-highs in goals (11) and points (25) and has registered four multi-goal games. His 50 shots and 23 shots on goal also lead the team. McCartney, a Biology major with a minor in Russian, has a 3.92 cumulative GPA.

Daoud and Gardiner have started 17 of Emory's 18 games, playing key roles on the Emory backline. Led by the senior duo, the Eagles defensive unit has posted eight shutouts and a 0.97 goals-against average in 2017, while limiting opposing teams to 10.2 shots per game and 3.7 shots on goal per match. Daoud, a Biology major, has compiled a 3.79 cumulative GPA. Gardiner, who also makes his second straight appearance on the Academic All-District team, is a History and International Studies double major with a 3.68 GPA.

University of Rochester (3):

Senior goalkeeper Redd Brown, junior defender Nik Angyal, and junior midfielder Bryce Ikeda have been elected Academic All-District III First Team by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Brown posted nine shutouts this season. In 1,561:43, he allowed 13 goals and made 45 saves for a 0.75 GAA and a .776 save percentage. In the month of October, he allowed one goal in six matches – and that goal coming after five straight shutouts. Four of the shutouts came against UAA competition. He earned Second Team All-UAA honors.
 
He has a cumulative GPA of 3.78 on a 4.00 scale carrying a double major of economics and religion. He is a research assistant in the political science department and did an internship with an investment bank in New York City named Moelis & Co. He volunteers for the international refugee school in downtown Rochester titled Rochester International Academy.
 
Angyal started 16 games and played in all 17 this season. As a defender, he was a crucial part of the back line that helped to post the nine shutouts and hold five other teams to one goal. He was voted the Most Valuable Defensive Player of Rochester's opening Flower City Soccer Classic when the Yellowjackets shut out Illinois Wesleyan University (2-0) and defeated Misericordia University (2-1).
 
He has a cumulative GPA of 4.00 (on the 4.00 scale), majoring in chemical engineering. He is a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and will be inducted into Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society, at the end of this semester. He is in his second year as a teaching assistant for Organic Chemistry and will be a teaching assisting for Fluid Dynamics in the spring. Last summer, he interned with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in the Petroleum Spills Division. Working under a NY State-licensed professional engineer, Angyal reviewed site investigation reports, work plans, and closure reports for petroleum spill sites with contaminated soil and/or groundwater.  He either approved the reports or suggested additional steps be taken in the clean-up of the spills.
 
He volunteers at the Rochester International Academy as well, going into classrooms on a bi-weekly basis in the off-season to help teachers with small group activities and to interact with kids. He volunteers at home with his local soccer club in Dutchess County.
 
Ikeda enters the NCAA playoffs as Rochester's second-leading scorer. He has five goals and three assists for 13 points. He is one of just six players to start all 17 games. In his career, he has started 47 games and played in all 50. He earned Second Team All-UAA honors this season.
 
He has a cumulative 3.74 GPA (on a 4.00 scale) majoring in electrical & computer engineering. Last summer, he interned with Bechtel Marine Propulsion Corporation in Pittsburgh, doing engineering projects on submarines. He helped to raise money for new equipment for a Special Olympics soccer team, and like his teammates, volunteers at the Rochester International Academy tutoring elementary aged school children. He serves the University as a Student Alumni Ambassador, which entails connecting the current students with alumni and assisting with alumni events.

Carnegie Mellon University (3):

Brandeis University (1):

Senior goalkeeper Ben Woodhouse has been selected as an Academic All-District first-team member by the College Sports Information Directors of America. 

Woodhouse, who was named All-University Athletic Association (UAA) Second Team yesterday, played the first 13 games of the season for the Judges before suffering an injury that forced him to miss the final three league games. In those four UAA games, he saved 23 of the 24 shots he faced, including a career-high 11 in a 2-0 win over Carnegie Mellon Oct. 7, and eight in a 1-0 overtime win against Emory on Oct. 15. Woodhouse's regular season ended with a 0.78 goals-against average – third-lowest in the conference - and 44 saves, fifth-most. His .958 save percentage and 0.27 GAA in UAA games were both the lowest in the league. Woodhouse was a first-team All-UAA selection as a sophomore and a second-team selection last year.

In the classroom, Woodhouse boasts a 3.92 grade-point average as an economics and business double major. He has been on the Dean's List every semester at Brandeis and has been named to three Academic All-UAA teams. Woodhouse also serves as an intramural sports supervisor and is a member of BMen, a Brandeis men's group organized to raise awareness of domestic violence issues.

Washington University (1):

Washington University in St. Louis junior midfielder Ben Strozewski was named to the 2017 Academic All-District Five Division III Men's Soccer First Team. 

Strozewski started 12 of 14 games played and had three goals and three assists for nine points, which was second on the the squad. He scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Case Western Reserve University Oct. 13.

A two-time Academic all-University Athletic Association (UAA) selection, Strozewski has a 3.89 grade point average while majoring in physics.
