Maroons Claim Sole Possession of First Place in UAA Men's Soccer With Win At Brandeis

From University of Chicago Athletics

Make it two straight game-winners for first-year Carter Romero, as the University of Chicago men's soccer forward netted the difference in a thrilling 1-0 win over No. 19 Brandeis University Sunday on the road.

The victory puts the Maroons (15-2, 5-1-0 University Athletic Association) into sole possession of first place in the conference with one game remaining. Should No. 7 UChicago defeat or tie Washington-St. Louis in its home finale Nov. 4, the Maroons would claim the UAA regular-season championship and an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Romero scored for the second time in as many games after the netting the game-winner in Friday's 3-0 win over NYU. Sunday, it took 79 minutes to break a scoreless tie, as the rookie broke through with the score on a rebound off a shot on goal by sophomore teammate Dayo Adeosun.

Another first year, UChicago keeper Aaron Katsimpalis, also turned out a big performance in his second start in goal. The rookie stopped three shots in 90 minutes played to record his second-straight clean sheet.

UChicago outshot the Judges (12-4-, 4-2) by a 18-9 margin while holding a slim 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Romero and junior Max Lopez each recorded five shots each to lead the Maroons, who also won the battle in corner kicks, 8-5.
