The University of Chicago men's soccer team blitzed top-ranked Calvin College early and then withstood multiple lightning delays to hold on for a 2-0 victory in the NCAA Division III Round of 16 held at Stagg Field Friday.

The No. 7 Maroons (19-2) advanced to Saturday's NCAA Quarterfinal, marking only the second time the program has advanced that far in the tournament and the first time since 1996, when UChicago reached the Final Four.

UChicago will play in the sectional championship game slated for 7 p.m. CT at Stagg Field turf Saturday night.

Friday, the Maroons came out of the gate with its high-powered offense on full throttle. Sophomore Dayo Adeosun started the scoring in just the 2nd minute of play, taking a perfect pass down the right side from first-year Scott Lich and finished just under the cross bar to make it 1-0 UChicago.

Just two minutes later, it was Adeosun and junior Max Lopez who played a little give-and-go that resulted in the dangerous Lopez striking for a goal to the left of the keeper from about 15 yards out.

That's when the storms rolled in, delaying the match for over an hour and a half before play resumed.

In total, the match lasted three and a half hours from start to finish, but the Maroons defense held strong for its remainder, earning its 10th shutout of the year. Senior keeper Hill Bonin returned to action and collected his 14th win, stopping three shots in the clean sheet.

UChicago outshot the Knights (21-1-1) by a 16-11 margin and held a slight edge in corner kicks, 5-3.

The Maroons handed Calvin – 2016 NCAA Division III runner-ups  --its first loss of the season.
