In a battle of nationally-ranked opponents, the University of Chicago men's soccer team overcame off a first-half deficit and overwhelmed Carthage College in the second half to earn the 3-1 win on Saturday night.

The No. 9-ranked Maroons won their fourth-straight game to start the season and dealt the No. 22-ranked Red Men (3-1) their first loss.

With both teams preferring an up-tempo style, it was UChicago that ultimately imposed its will. The Maroons outshot the hosts 17-5 for the game, with a 7-5 edge in corner kicks.

However, it was Carthage who got on the scoreboard first with a 37th-minute goal off a free kick. The score remained 1-0 going into the halftime break.

It didn't take long for the Maroons to shake off their first deficit of the year. Ten minutes into the second half, junior forward Max Lopez provided the tying score off an assist by sophomore forward Dayo Adeosun. Lopez increased his season goal total to seven.

Freshman defender Isaiah Holquist nearly gave his team the lead when his shot hit the crossbar in the 58th minute. Just 35 seconds later, freshman midfielder Carter Romero recorded his first collegiate goal to provide UChicago the 2-1 advantage. Adeosun assisted on the play for his fifth assist in the past two contests.

Romero then added some insurance with another strike in the 86th minute, assisted by junior forward Matthew Koh.

Senior goalkeeper Hill Bonin (4-0 record) allowed one goal and made one save in 90 minutes of action.
