Isaiah Holquist netted his first career goal and Matthew Koh scored twice to lead the No. 4 University of Chicago men's soccer team to a convincing 3-0 win over visiting No. 20 Carnegie Mellon Friday.
The Maroons (12-1, 2-1 University Athletic Association) bounced back from their first loss of the year last Saturday with a dominating performance against the visiting Tartans (8-3-1, 1-2 UAA), using a second-half surge to earn UChicago's sixth shutout of the season.
After a scoreless first period, Holquist, a first-year midfielder, didn't waste any time in getting the Maroons on the board. With Koh directing traffic in the midfield, the senior forward slotted a pass to a sprinting Holquist on the left side, who beat the CMU keeper to the far post to give UChicago a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute.
Just eight minutes later, senior Andre Abedian was taken down in the box to set up a Maroon penalty kick, which Koh delivered on in the 54th to push it to 2-0, UChicago.
Koh would add the exclamation point in the 79th, as Dayo Adeosun fed his teammate on the left side – and Josh Scofield deftly let the ball through – for Koh to finish to the near post.
The Maroons would outshoot the Tartans, 8-4, including a 7-2 margin on goal, though both teams finished with four corner kicks.
Senior keeper Hill Bonin earned his 12th win of the year in goal, picking up two saves in 90 minutes.
