Andre Abedian, Max Lopez Deliver Late-Game Heroics to Lift Chicago Over CWRU in Overtime

From University of Chicago Athletics

The No. 4 University of Chicago men's soccer team needed some late game heroics from Max Lopez and Andre Abedian to pull off a thrilling 2-1 conference victory over visiting Case Western Reserve Sunday at Stagg Field.

Trailing 1-0 late in regulation, Dayo Adeosun delivered a perfect free kick to the box that found the head of Lopez, who drilled in his team-leading 14th goal of the season to knot things at 1-all in the 85th minute.

The Maroons didn't disappoint their first overtime contest of the season, as Mathew Koh sent a cross into the box that found Abedian for a point blank score that landed just inside the post to lift UChicago to its 13th win of the year.

With high winds throughout the game, both teams struggled to find the back of the net through the first 78 minutes. Case Western (5-7-2, 1-3 University Athletic Association) finally broke the scoreless tied on a Seldon Magruder unassisted goal with 12 minutes left in regulation.

UChicago (13-1, 3-1 UAA) picked up its second-straight win of the weekend after Friday's dominating performance against No. 20 Carnegie Mellon, who the Maroons defeated 3-0.

Abedian netted his third goal of the year and his second game-winner.

The Maroons led Spartans in shots, 23-10, including 6-3 on goal, but CWRU earned four corner kicks compared to three for the hosts.

Senior keeper Hill Bonin collected his 13th win of the year, stopping one shot in goal.
