Max Lopez continued his offensive brilliance to net the lone goal of the game in the first half and the No. 1 University of Chicago men's soccer team's defense held off host Wheaton College in a 1-0 victory Wednesday.
Lopez connected on his team-leading ninth goal of the year in the 31st, beating the Wheaton keeper with a header with the help of a Josh Scofield assist to put the top-ranked Maroons up, 1-0, heading into the break.
The junior forward's game-winner was the fourth of the year for Lopez, which leads all of NCAA Division III, while his nine goals stand sixth nationally.
The Thunder (3-4) kept the UChicago offense quiet down the stretch by edging the Maroons in shots (7-6) in the second period. The Maroons did outshoot Wheaton for the game, 13-12, but both teams stood tied in shots on goal with four each.
Senior keeper Hill Bonin helped preserve his team's perfect 7-0 record with four saves in the shutout, his third of the season.
Lopez led Chicago with six shots and Andre Abedian added three.
