The Washington University in St. Louis men's soccer team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over Case Western Reserve University Friday at Francis Field in St. Louis.
WashU improved to 7-3-1, 1-2 in the University Athletic Association (UAA) with the win, while Case fell to 5-6-2, 1-2 in the UAA.
Freshman goalkeeper Bryan Hales made his first-career start and recorded six saves, all in the second half.
WashU had a 5-2 advantage in shots in the first half, but it was Case that struck first in the 16thminute. Alex Besl made a nice run down the right side and sent a cross in that Zachary Senft headed in over the head of Hales.
The Bears answered back in the 32nd minute after sophomore Makio Yamamoto was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick. Senior Chris Rieger converted the penalty kick to tie the score at 1-1.
Hales came up with two point-blank saves in the opening three minutes of the second half to keep the game tied.
WashU took the lead for good in the 51st minute after junior Ben Strozewski scored off a rebound from junior Ryan Sproule. The Bears had a 17-11 advantage in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
WashU hosts Carnegie Mellon University (8-3-1, 1-2 UAA) on Sunday, Oct. 15, at 11 a.m. Prior to Sunday's contest, the Bears will celebrate Senior Day.
BEAR NOTEBOOK: WashU leads the all-time series with Case 27-4, and the Bears have won the last three meetings … The Bears are 5-1 at home this season … The game-winning goal for Strozewski was the first of his career.
