Nine UAA Men's Soccer Student-Athletes Earn Academic All-District Recognition

Nine UAA men's soccer student-athletes were named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Men’s Soccer Team.

The team recognizes the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The Google Cloud Academic All-America® program separatelyrecognizes soccer honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.

First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team (if necessary) Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early December. The Google Cloud Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes listed on the following pages and are divided intoeight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.

The Division II and III Google Cloud Academic All-America® programs are partially financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2018-19 Divisions II and III Academic All-America® programs. -

The UAA honorees:

Zack Masciopinto, Carnegie Mellon University

Masciopinto's third Academic All-District honor comes on the heels of a season in which he starred in nine games before a season-ending injury left him sidelined during the Tartans run through University Athletic Association (UAA) play. During his time on the pitch, Masciopinto recorded six goals, scoring in five straight contests while the Tartans took a 6-0-2 record into UAA action. A three-time captain for the Tartans, Masciopinto finished his career as a two-time All-UAA First Team selection with 32 goals. His 32 goals is the most by a Tartan since Ricky Griffin scored 51 from 2006-2009 and is eighth-best in Tartan history.

Masciopinto will complete his degree in mechanical engineering and robotics and currently carries a 3.74 GPA. He is the vice president of member development for CMU Solar Racing, a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), and volunteers with Team IMPACT, Special Olympics, and at Arsenal Middle School in Pittsburgh as a clinician and mentor. Masciopinto has also been involved with the Lincoln Elementary tutoring program by Carnegie Mellon athletes where he visits weekly to assist students in math and reading. Last summer, he interned at Lockheed Martin Space Systems where he plans to return in 2019 before completing a one-year master's program in mechanical engineering at Carnegie Mellon.

Jack McCambridge, Carnegie Mellon University

McCambridge is also a four-year starter for the Tartans where he plays outside back. This year, the Tartans hold a 0.84 goals against average with six shutouts. As a senior, McCambridge maintains a 4.0 GPA as a mechanical engineering major with a minor in business administration. As a junior, McCambridge was inducted into Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society and spent his spring semester at Apple where he was part of the battery product design team.

McCambridge stays busy at CMU as a member of CMU Solar Racing and the CMU Hyperloop team. He was a mechanical engineering intern for Nucor Steel in 2016 and a satellite propulsion design intern at Boeing in 2017. After his 7-month stay at Apple in 2018, McCambridge was offered a full-time position where he'll continue work in battery product design. McCambridge is also the team's philanthropy leader where he coordinates the after-school program with Arsenal Middle School and he's joined the program at Lincoln Elementary helping with fifth grade math.

Garrett Winter, Case Western Reserve University

Winter has had a breakout season during his junior campaign. He currently ranks tied for first on the team with eight goals and has tallied three assists for the second-most points on the team this season (19). Winter has scored three game-winning goals in 2018, including the game-winner on a penalty kick to defeat the then top-ranked University of Chicago on October 14th.

Winter carries a 3.94 cumulative grade point average as an Economics major at CWRU. He has received UAA All-Academic honors two times over his career, and has been selected as an All-UAA honorable mention during his career.

Jun Tsuru, Emory University

Tsuru, a Roswell, GA native, completed his junior season with career-highs across the board helping the Emory men to a 9-7-2 overall record. Tsuru netted his 17 points (5G, 7A) during a nine-game streak to open the season, tied for the second longest streak in program history. He set a single game personal-best in back-to-back contests against Birmingham-Southern and Sewanee, registering a goal and an assist in each game. The third-year midfielder boasts a 3.60 GPA as Finance major.

Max Lopez, University of Chicago

Lopez received Academic All-District status in men's soccer. The senior forward is also two-time University Athletic Association (UAA) All-Academic Team member. He was recently named First Team All-UAA for the fourth time in his career. The two-time All-American is the all-time leading scorer in UChicago history with 51 goals and 127 points. Lopez has scored 13 goals this season and handed out six assists.

Nikolas Angyal, University of Rochester

Ikeda, a senior co-captain has started all 18 games for Rochester.  He leads the Yellowjackets in scoring with 20 total points, coming on seven goals and six assists.  He has four game-winning goals and has played over 1,300 minutes this season, fourth most among Rochester field players.  Ikeda scored multiple goals twice this season, including both goals in UR's 2nd Round NCAA win over Brockport on Sunday.  He was a 1st Team All-UAA selection in 2018.
 
In the classroom, Ikeda is an electrical and computer engineering major with a cumulative GPA of 3.68.  He has completed internships with Harris Corporation and Bechtel Marine Propulsion Corporation and was a United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-American last season along with being an Academic All-District honoree.  He is a three-time UAA All-Academic team member and earned UR's Garnish Scholar Athlete award earlier this season.  Additionally, he has volunteered his time raising money for Special Olympics and has served as a volunteer tutor at the Rochester International Academy.

Bryce Ikeda, University of Rochester

Angyal, also a senior on the 2018 squad, is enjoying his best season to date, having big roles both defensively and offensively.  He was an honorable mention All-UAA honoree in 2018 and has helped the Yellowjackets to rank in the top-30 in NCAA Division III in goals against average (20th, 0.583), shutout percentage (26th, 0.556, 10 shutouts) and save percentage (30th, 0.838).  Offensively, Angyal is tied for the team lead in assists with six this season while playing 1,560 minutes across 18 starts, the second most minutes among UR field players this season.  He assisted on game-winning goals three times this year, including in both the 1st and 2nd rounds of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
 
Off the field, Angyal has a perfect 4.0 GPA through his junior year, majoring in Chemical Engineering.  He was a 2nd Team Academic All-American last season in addition to being selected Phi Beta Kappa and Tau Beta Pi.  He is in his second year being a teaching assistant in Fluid Dynamics and has also done so for organic chemistry.  Angyal has participated in research in UR's Chemical Engineering department developing an electrolyte for use in Lithium-Ion batteries, as well as interning with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.  His volunteer experience includes working with his local soccer club in Dutchess County and serving as a tutor at the Rochester International Academy.

Ryan Sproule, Washington University

Sproule, a first-team all-University Athletic Association (UAA) selection, started 15 of 16 games played and led the team with 10 goals and five assists for 25 points. He was first in the conference in shots (86), and was also second in game-winning goals (4) and third in goals scored and points. 

Sproule netted the game-winning goal in a 2-0 win over Brandeis on Oct. 26. He finished his career with 31 goals and 13 assists for 75 points. The 31 goals scored are tied for 10thmost in school history. A three-time Academic All-UAA selection, Sproule has a 3.55 grade point average while majoring in computer science. 

Ben Strozewski, Washington University

Strozewski, a second-team all-UAA selection, started all 16 games on the back line and recorded three assists. He was part of the WashU defense that allowed 21 goals in 16 games with three shutouts. Strozewksi started 34 of 52 career games played, with three goals and seven assists for 13 points.

A two-time Google Cloud Academic All-District and three-time Academic all-UAA selection, Strozewski has a 3.80 grade point average while majoring in physics.
