Two of University of Chicago's most prolific goal-scorers were honored for their academic and athletic achievements on Tuesday as the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selected seniors Max Lopez and Jenna McKinney to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America men's and women's soccer teams.
Lopez was picked to the Second Team and became the second UChicago men's player to earn Academic All-America recognition. Pat Barry previously claimed a Third Team spot in 2001. Lopez, the 2017 D3soccer.com Forward of the Year, concluded his UChicago career as the program's all-time leader in goals (54) and points (133). A three-time All-American, he was also named to the UAA All-Academic Team on three occasions. Lopez majors in environmental studies and public policy.
McKinney earned Third Team honors for the second-consecutive year. In 2017, she and Whitley Cargile became the first players in the history of the women's program to receive the award from CoSIDA. McKinney's 43 career goals and 107 points place her second in the school record book, while her 21 assists rank seventh in team history. An economics major, McKinney was named the United Soccer Coaches Scholar Player of the Year in 2017 and has claimed a place on the UAA All-Academic Team in each of the past three seasons.
Nominees for the Google Cloud Academic All-America teams must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at their current institution.
