Cristian Baltier pounced on a turnover in the defensive end and scored 51 seconds into the first overtime as the University of Rochester defeated Brandeis University, 2-1, in a men's UAA soccer match on Friday night.
The victory boosts Rochester's record to 9-1-1, 1-1-1 in the UAA. Brandeis is 6-5-1 overall, 1-1-1 in the UAA. On Sunday, Rochester plays at NYU and Emory goes to Brandeis.
UAA games have all fit the same mode for Rochester this year: it ain't over 'til. In the UAA opener, Chicago posted a 1-0 victory, scoring in the 88th minute (UC ranked #2, UR #6 entering that match). Last Sunday at Fauver Stadium, Washington-St. Louis built a 2-0 lead early in the second half before Rochester levelled it with a pair of goals in a span of five minutes. After two scoreless OTs, it stood at 2-2.
This one got to overtime when neither team could convert some chances down the stretch. Brandeis scored in the third minute of play. Brandon Miskin's corner kick was headed into goal by Alex Walter at 2:44.
Rochester drew even 10 minutes before halftime. Bryce Ikeda's long throwin set up a header for Aidan Miller at 35:14.
Ikeda set up a couple of chances midway through the second period. With the game just past the one hour mark, he played a free kick down the left side to Josh Cooley who returned the pass as the Brandeis defenders closed in. Ikeda took two dribbles, then angled a low ball diagonally through the penalty area but neither side could get a foot on it and it went out for goal kick. UR earned one of its seven corner kicks in the 65th minute. Ikeda played it low to the top of the penalty arc where Cooley was stationed. His shot skimmed through the area, but wide left.
Miskin nearly added a goal to his game resume in the 84th minute. His long free kick from the right sideline sailed high.
With the clock below four minutes left in regulation, Mitch Volis had a pair of chances. The first one resulted in a save from Greg Irwin in the Brandeis goal (he had two saves on the night). The second chance, almost immediately, was driven wide right of the post from a position on left wing. Ikeda's long throw-in provided Alec Hay a chance to snap the tie, but the ball flew high.
Rochester held a small advantage in shots, 15-12. Patrick Conwaymade four saves to Irwin's pair. UR had seven corner kicks and Brandeis had two.
