Yellowjackets Record Second Consecutive Overtime Win, Top NYU 1-0

Yellowjackets Record Second Consecutive Overtime Win, Top NYU 1-0

From University of Rochester Athletics

Senior Patrice Douge curled in a left wing shot from 20 yards into the corner of the net on the far side five minutes into the second overtime, giving the University of Rochester men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over New York University on Sunday afternoon at Gaelic Park.

Douge's goal is just the second of his career and first this season, giving the Yellowjackets (10-1-1, 2-1-1) their second straight overtime victory. UR topped Brandeis 2-1 on Friday night, scoring in the first minute of the extra period.  NYU drops to 10-3-0 (2-2-0 UAA) with the loss.

After a wild Sunday in the conference, Rochester jumps up to second place in the UAA standings, tied with Washington-St. Louis, Case Western Reserve and Brandeis with a 2-1-1 mark and seven overall points.  Chicago is the leader with nine points and a 3-1 record.  The Violets sit sixth with six points and a 2-2 mark.

The opening 45 minutes was all Rochester, as the visitors held an 8-1 lead in shots and 3-0 edge in corners.

UR's best chance came in the 28th minute when Bryce Ikeda had a one-timer from the edge of the crease after a low cross from Mitch Volis along the left side, but Ikeda's attempt sailed wide of the NYU net.

90 seconds later, Douge, after just entering the game off the bench, unleashed a hard shot after streaking in from the left side, one which ended up right in the hands of NYU keeper Grant Engel.

In the 39th minute, NYU's only shot of the half was a good opportunity for Maxi Rodriguez, but his turn around shot from 13 yards out didn't have enough pace on it and UR's Patrick Conway was there for the save.

Rochester then provided the first scoring chance in the second half in the 57th minute. A chipped ball into the box found the foot of Volis after a Violet defender slipped and fell, but the UR player couldn't control the initial touch on an open net and the defense recovered to block the shot away.

NYU then turned the tables for nearly the remainder of regulation time with a number of near misses.

Rodriguez had two hard header flicks that sailed just wide in the 58th and 68th minute, with entry passes coming in from both sides of the field.

At 73:49, Rochester defender Nik Angyal denied NYU's Matteo Russo a goal when Angyal made a kick save off the line after a header from six yards out.

Eight minutes later, NYU sent another cross deep into the box where Oliver Kleban had a flying header attempt saved by Conway. The UR senior keeper got just enough of the ball to deflect it into the post and eventually out to safety.

Rochester's Aidan Miller made a final minute charge for the visitors, heading a shot just wide after a throw in deep in Violet territory.

Most of the action in the overtime periods was in favor of the Yellowjackets, as the Violets were held without a shot in the extra sessions.

At 95:16, UR's Cristian Baltier had a golden chance notch his second straight overtime game-winner, but his left footed shot off a scramble following a throw in was headed out of the goal by NYU defender Jake Velvel.

It was Baltier again starting a rush in the opening minute of the second overtime, slipping a pass up the middle through the defense to Josh Cooley. Cooley then dropped a pass back to Ikeda who had a low, skidding shot saved by Engel.

40 seconds later, NYU's best chance of the overtimes came when a long ball from the right side slipped through Conway's hands in the goal, but no Violet attacking player was there for the cleanup and the Yellowjackets were able to clear the loose ball away.

Douge's game-winner ended up coming at 104:33, when he was given space along the left side and found a perfect spot with his left footed shot, sending the ball just over the leaping Engel into the NYU net.
