Carnegie Mellon Sweeps Another Double Dual Meet

(NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.) - The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team won its opening meet of the spring semester, defeating SUNY Geneseo and Westminster College in a double dual meet at Westminster. The Tartans topped Geneseo 170-128 and Westminster 158-133 while only winning five events.

Four different Tartans won events with the 200-yard freestyle relay earning the fifth win on the day for the Cardinal and Gray.

Junior Andrew Yee (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) started his day with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.19 and later won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:48.40. In both events, the Tartans also took third place with sophomore Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) finishing the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.94 and sophomore Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) the 500-yard freestyle in 4:53.90.

Senior Eddie Sears (Boca Raton, Fla./Spanish River) touched first in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.02 and second in the 100-yard freestyle in 49.06. Freshman Brian Walsh (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) also had a first-place and second-place finish for the day, winning the 200-yard butterfly in 1:56.55 and the touching second in the 100-yard butterfly in a season-best 52.41. Senior Terrence Wong (Solon, Ohio/Solon) was just behind Walsh in the 100-yard butterfly, finishing third in 52.79.

Nielsen led the Tartans in the 400-yard IM by touching first in 4:16.57 with junior David Campbell (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) taking second in the 400-yard IM in 4:20.27.

The Tartans took second and third in both breaststroke events. Freshman Evan Li (Cupertino, Calif./Monta Vista) was second in the 100-yard event, touching in 102.27 with freshman Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) taking second in the 200-yard event in 2:16.32. Touching third in the 100-yard event was sophomore Peter Podniesinski (Melville, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills East) in 1:02.31 and taking third in the 200-yard event was sophomore Philip Farr (Campbell Calif./Bellarmine College) in 2:16.55.

Freshman Dustin Ferzacca (Beverly, Mass./Manchester Essex) earned points for the Tartans with a third-place finish in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:21.54. Sophomore diver Ioannis Michailidis (Athens, Greece / Hellenic American) recorded a career-best 152.00 points on the 3-meter board placing fourth.

To close the meet, the 200-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Lucas Bruder (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette), Wong, Walsh and Sears won in 1:27.93.
