Tam and CWRU Men Break Two More Records on Day Two of UAA Invitational

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

Sophomore Aaron Tam (Doral, Fla./Ronald Reagan Doral Senior) broke a 25-year old school record in the 100-yard butterfly as the Case Western Reserve University men's swimming & diving team concluded action at the 2014 University Athletic Association Invitational at Veale Natatorium.

CWRU hosted a two-day invitational with the University of Chicago and the University of Rochester (N.Y.) due to inclement weather in Atlanta and travel issues throughout the week for schools in the UAA. Emory University (Ga.) hosted a two-day UAA Championship on Friday and Saturday with the four remaining conference schools. The championship was originally scheduled as a three-day meet before Mother Nature intervened. Results from the two meets will be combined on Monday to determine team standings and All-UAA awards.

Tam swam a 50.39 in the 100 fly to break the mark of 50.45 set all the way back in 1989 by Spartan Club Hall of Famer John Bradshaw. Tam also hit an NCAA "B" cut in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 16:01.03. Freshman teammate David Merriman (Clive, Iowa/Valley) also hit a "B" cut in the event with a mark of 16:10.60.

The Spartan 400 medley relay team also broke a school record as the quartet of juniors Eric Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) and Caleb Allen (Knoxville, Tenn./Bearden) along with seniors Heath Hudgins (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and Scott McHenry (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) finished in 3:04.39.

During morning prelims, senior Sean Nickley (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) swam a "B" cut time of 2:01.77 in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Combined with yesterday's performance, the Spartans broke seven school records and achieved eight NCAA "B" cuts.
