Chicago Men Finish Second at UAA Swimming and Diving Championships

From University of Chicago Athletics

The University of Chicago men's swimming and diving team took second place at the conclusion of the 2014 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships over the weekend. Emory University won both the men's and women's team titles for the 16th-consecutive year.

Final team scores and individual champions were announced on Tuesday. The final results were compiled from the official UAA Championships site at Emory University and the satellite site at Case Western Reserve University. Inclement weather in the Atlanta area forced three of the eight conference schools, including UChicago, to relocate to the satellite meet in Cleveland, Ohio.

Over the two-day competition, the Maroons combined to win nine UAA titles while breaking 26 school records and 14 pool records. UChicago's divers were able to reach Emory and compete in the one-meter and three-meter dives. Junior Matthew Staab picked up the team's first conference title by winning the three-meter dive with a score of 534.80.

Sophomore Matthew Veldman was a multiple title winner in both the 100-yard butterfly (49.09) and the 100-yard freestyle (45.13). He also set a new UAA record with a time of 49.05 in the 100-yard butterfly prelims.

Senior Eric Hallman finished in first place in the 200-yard IM (1:50.96), while also setting the UAA record in the event prelims with a time of 1:49.97. Sophomore Thomas Meek picked up his conference title in the 200-yard freestyle with a mark of 1:40.33. The freshman class made an impact as well, as Jonas Fowler won the 400-yard IM (4:00.93) and Kevin Ku was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly (1:50.05).

The Maroons picked up one relay victory in the men's 800-yard freestyle relay. Fowler, Meek, freshman Jonathan Simoneau and Hallman combined to win in 6:44.21 and set a new UAA record.

All-UAA honors were given to any individuals or relays that placed in the top three of each event. The men's team garnered All-UAA recognition in 15 events (including five relays).
