Chicago Swimming and Diving Teams Excel at Day One of UAA Invitational

From University of Chicago Athletics

The University of Chicago swimming and diving teams set 16 school records and eight pool records at day one of the University Athletic Association (UAA) Invitational on Saturday.

Due to inclement weather conditions in Atlanta, UChicago is one of three UAA schools that are competing at a satellite meet at Case Western Reserve University, while the UAA Championships are taking place at Emory University with the other five conference schools. Individual and team results will then be combined from the two locations to determine conference champions. Complete results will be available from Emory by Monday morning.

UChicago's divers were able to reach Emory and competed in the UAA Championships. On Friday, junior Matthew Staab won the three-meter dive with a score of 534.80. Junior Anthony Restaino was right behind him in second place with a score of 502.05. Staab went on to take second place in the one-meter dive on Saturday (517.85) while Restaino was third (458.05). At the conclusion of Saturday's meet, Staab was named UAA Men's Diver of the Year.

In Cleveland, eight Maroons set school records on the day. Junior Jennifer Hill posted three school records in the 200-yard IM (2:05.76), the 100-yard breaststroke prelims (1:05.23) and in the 50-yard freestyle as the lead leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay (23.98). A trio of freshmen also made their mark in the record books. Maya Scheidl swam a pool and school record time of 51.16 in the 100-yard freestyle prelims and Michelle Law posted a 2:03.22 to set a school record in the 200-yard backstroke. Alison Wall also set her own school record in the 100-yard backstroke (56.13) as the lead leg of the 400-yard medley relay.

Senior Eric Hallman led the men's effort with a pool and school record time of 1:50.96 in the 200-yard IM prelims. Junior Andrew Angeles broke his own school record and set a pool record in the 100-yard breaststroke prelims (55.75). Sophomore Matthew Veldman's 100-yard freestyle time of 45.13 was a pool and school record. Sophomore Thomas Meek also found success as part of a relay, breaking the school record in the 50-yard freestyle with a mark of 20.56 as the lead leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Six different relays set new school records as well. The women's 200-yard freestyle relay (1:35.10) and the men's 200-yard freestyle relay (1:22.42) broke both the pool and school records in that event. The men's 400-yard medley relay posted a pool and school record time of 3:20.60, while the women's 400-yard medley relay recorded a school record time of 3:48.73.
