School Record Paces Tartans at Total Performance Invitational

The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team continued competition at the Total Performance Invitational at Kenyon College on Friday, December 5. The Tartans are in fifth place and had many season-best swims for the day, including a school record time in the 50-yard freestyle by freshman Kevin Steinhouse (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School).

The 200-yard freestyle relay of Steinhouse, sophomore Brian Walsh (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier), senior Josh Lucheon (Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville Catholic), and sophomore Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) touched seventh overall in a season-best time of 1:23.50. Later in the meet, Steinhouse would finish 10th in the 50-yard freestyle but not before he set a new school record during the preliminaries with a time of 20.77.

Two swimmers reached the final of the 200-yard butterfly as Walsh finished seventh in 1:51.09 and senior David Campbell (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) finished ninth in 1:52.14, both in season-best times.

Junior Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) had the team's best finish in the 200-yard freestyle as he swam to a 1:43.01 and placed 24th overall.

Freshman Matthew Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep) finished the 100-yard breaststroke in a season-best time of 57.09, as he finished 12th overall. Chu also holds the top spot on the team. Junior Philip Farr (Campbell, Calif./Bellarmine College) was 17th in the same event as he touched in 57.89, while Jay was 18th in 58.81.

Sophomore Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) recorded a career-best 51.82 in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing 13th, as freshman Michael DiBacco (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) was 16th in 52.18, but finished the preliminaries in 51.99.

In the 400-yard IM, junior Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) touched 14th in a season-best 4:03.10, as Campbell reached the finals with a preliminaries time of 4:05.81.

The final event of the day was the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Mehta, Chu, Walsh and Steinhouse finished 11th in 3:24.56.
