Three Provisional Marks Lead Tartans at UAA Championships

The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team took to the pool for the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships on Thursday, February 12 at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. The Tartans had two individuals and one relay provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships for the evening.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Sivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale), senior Josh Lucheon (Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville Catholic), sophomore Brian Walsh (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and freshman Kevin Steinhouse (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) started the evening touching sixth in 1:23.62.

Shortly after, Walsh finished the 500-yard freestyle ninth overall, winning his finals heat, touching in a career-best 4:33.89 to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships. JuniorSteven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) also provisionally qualified for the national meet in the 500-yard freestyle, touching 11th overall in a career-best 4:33.99. Five other Tartans reached the evening swim in the 500-yard freestyle, all earning points for the team.

Senior Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) paced the Tartans in the 200-yard IM, finishing 10th overall in a career-best 1:53.60. Senior David Campbell (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) also swam in the finals, touching 14th in 1:55.11, with junior Jay Jin (Canton, Mich./Canton) winning his heat and finishing 17th overall in 1:54.48.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Steinhouse swam to a 15th-place showing in 21.25 before the 400-yard medley relay squad of freshman Michael DiBacco (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia), freshman Matt Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep), Walsh and Steinhouse finished fifth in 3:22.95 to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championships.
