Tartans Return From Training Trip to Win Twice at Home

The Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team recently returned from its training trip in Miami, Florida, and took on Westminster College and SUNY Geneseo on Saturday, January 17. The Tartans won eight events and defeated Westminster 186-108 and Geneseo 193-107.

The meet began with the 200-yard medley relay as senior Josh Lucheon (Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville Catholic), freshman Matthew Chu (Warren, N.J./Saint Peter's Prep), sophomoreSivan Mehta (Scarsdale, N.Y./Scarsdale) and freshman Kevin Steinhouse (St. Louis, Mo./John Burroughs School) finished first in 1:34.05.

Sophomore Brian Walsh (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) won the 200-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 1:42.94 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:44.56 and now leads the team in both events.

Freshman Josh Taekman (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) placed second in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:59.21 and third in the 500 in 4:48.19, as junior Steven Geier (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) was third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.61), to help lead the Tartans in the distance freestyle events.

In the sprint freestyles, Steinhouse won the 50-yard event in 21.83 and placed second in the 100-yard event in 48.54.

Mehta picked up a victory in the 100-yard backstroke in 53.45 and the 100-yard butterfly in 51.50.

Chu paced the Tartans in the 100-yard breastroke with a second-place finish in 58.98 with sophomore Brian Jay (Wayne, Pa./Conestoga) finishing second in the 200-yard breastroke in 2:11.67 and third the 100-yard event in 1:00.21.

The 200-yard IM was won by junior Matthew Nielsen (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) in 1:57.44, as senior David Campbell (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) won the 200-yard butterfly in 1:56.86 before placing third in the 200-yard IM in 2:00.77.

Freshman Michael DiBacco (Batavia, N.Y./Batavia) picked up another second-place finish for the Tartans in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:57.51.

Diving for the first time was sophomore Brad Jennette (Pittsford, N.Y./Sutherland) who finished fifth on the 1-meter board with 163.30 points and sixth on the 3-meter board with 128.85 points. Junior Yannos Michailidis (Athens, Greece/Hellenic American) tallied 149.75 points on the 3-meter board to place fifth and 133.55 points on the 1-meter board to place xixth.

The team closed the meet with their eighth win, touching first in the 200-yard freestyle relay behind a time of 1:26.34 by Jay, Mehta, Walsh and Steinhouse.
