Chicago Breaks Records at Day Two of Phoenix Fall Classic

The University of Chicago men's swimming and diving team broke one pool record and one school record to highlight day two of the Phoenix Fall Classic on Saturday.

Freshman Alex Lin set a new school record in the men's 200-yard backstroke with a winning time of 1:51.22, breaking the old mark of 1:51.98. His Saturday time was a NCAA B cut mark.

The 200-yard medley relays set a new pool record and posted a NCAA B cut. The time of 1:30.38 bested the old pool record by 0.54 seconds.

The men's diving trio of senior Matthew Staab, senior Kevin Steffes (431.90) and freshman Dean Boures (429.15) all posted NCAA provisional scores in the one-meter dive. Staab won the event with a score of 490.95. Another trio of Maroons posted B cuts in the 100-yard breaststroke – junior James Taylor, senior Andrew Angeles (57.06) and senior Michael Charysh (57.69). Taylor emerged as the winner at 56.74.

Three more men reached the B cut standard, including freshman Luke Trafton (200-yard backstroke / 1:52.97), junior Thomas Meek (100-yard freestyle / 45.59) and sophomore Kevin Ku (200-yard butterfly / 1:51.01).
