Andrew Wilson of Emory Named Capital One Academic All-American of the Year

From Emory University Athletics

Emory University junior swimmer Andrew Wilson (Bethesda, Maryland / Phillips Academy) was named the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year for the At-Large Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

A physics and applied mathematics major with a 3.79 cumulative grade point average, Wilson becomes just the fifth Emory student-athlete ever to have been chosen as the National Academic All-American of the Year for his or her respective sport.  He joins Andrea Pawliczek (2001, women's soccer), Tom Shane (2002, at-large), Kyle Foster (2003, baseball) and Megan Light (2014, softball) in the select group.

Wilson was named to the Academic All-America First Team as well, becoming the 19th honoree in the history of the men's swimming and diving program, including seven first team selections.  In addition to Wilson, junior Elizabeth Aronoff (first team) and senior McKenna Newsum-Schoenberg (third team) were named to the Women's Academic All-America At-Large Team, bringing the total of Academic All-Americans in Emory Athletics history to 158, with 62 first team honors.

Wilson notched one of the best seasons in the history of Division III swimming, as he was named the NCAA Division III Men's Swimmer of the Year in 2015, after winning National Championships in the 100-yard breaststroke (51.72 seconds), 200-yard breaststroke (1:52.97) and 200-yard individual medley (1:46.23), each in a Division III record time.  Wilson added all-America finishes as a part of Emory's second-place 200-yard and 400-yard medley relays, with each setting a new school record, helping the Eagles finish fourth in the team standings at the meet.  The junior was also named the UAA Swimmer of the Year earlier in the season, after leading Emory to its 17th-consecutive conference title.

Wilson has been twice named a CSCAA Scholar All-American, and is a two-time Academic All-District honoree.  By virtue of being named the Men's At-Large Team's Academic All-American of the Year, Wilson will be placed on the ballot for Overall Academic All-American of the Year, which includes the Academic All-America of the Year selectees from the 12 Academic All-America Teams announced during the 2014-15 year.

The Academic All-America teams and Academic All-American of the Year are selected from the pool of Academic All-District winners, which were announced by CoSIDA in May.  Sports represented on the 'At-Large' team include women's bowling, women's crew, men's and women's fencing, women's field hockey, men's and women's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's rifle, men's and women's skiing, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo and men's wrestling.

To be eligible for Academic All-America ® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
