Andrew Wilson Named D-III Swimmer of the Year; Emory Men Finish Fourth at NCAA Championships

From Emory University Athletics

Emory University junior Andrew Wilson was named the NCAA Division III Swimmer of the Year, after capping off his incredible meet with his third individual championship on Saturday, winning the National Title in the 200-yard breaststroke and helping the Eagles finish in fourth place at the 2015 NCAA Division III Championships in Shenandoah, Texas.

Wilson set his third Division III record of the meet on Saturday, winning the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:52.97, smashing his own record of 1:57.18 set earlier in the year.  The National Championship was the third individual title of the meet for Wilson, the most ever by an Emory men's swimmer at a single NCAA Championship meet, and the fifth National Championship of his career, also a program record.

Wilson becomes the first men's swimmer in Emory history to be named the NCAA Division III Swimmer of the Year, and joins former Eagle Liz Horvat as the only two Emory swimmers to ever garner the honor.  Wilson won the 200-yard individual medley (1:46.23), the 100-yard breaststroke (51.72 seconds) and the 200-yard breaststroke at this year's NCAA Championships, all in NCAA Division III record times, while adding second-place finishes as a part of Emory's 200-yard medley (1:27.96) and 400-yard medley relays (3:13.55), which both set new school records.

Wilson's 100-yard breaststroke time made him the ninth-fastest American ever in the event (short course yards), while his 200-yard breaststroke time was the 13th-fastest SCY mark in the world.

Wilson's performances helped lead the Eagles to a fourth-place finish in the team standings, marking the 16th-consecutive top-five finish for the Emory men at the NCAA Championships.  Emory scored 233 points, finishing behind first-place Kenyon College (468 points), second-place Denison University (383 points) and third-place Williams College (292 points).

Adding an All-America finish on the final day for Emory was junior Jared Scheuer, who finished sixth in the 200-yard backstroke to earn the first All-America certificate of his career.  He broke the school record in the event (set at last year's NCAA Championships by Ross Spock) during the preliminaries with a time of 1:46.62.

Earning honorable mention finishes for the Emory men on Saturday were sophomore Christian Baker (11th, 15:50.09) and junior Eagan Zettlemoyer (16th, 16:00.21) in the 1,650-yard freestyle, and freshman Chandler Lichtefeld (14th, 2:03.17 in the preliminaries), senior Eric Ruggieri (15th, 2:02.04 in the preliminaries), and freshman Cooper Tollen (16th, 2:01.81 in the preliminaries) in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Emory concluded the meet with Wilson's three National Championships, in addition to collecting seven individual and two relay all-America honors, while adding on 11 individual and one relay all-America honorable mention.
