Two Honorable Mention All-America Honors Highlight First Night of NCAAs for Tartans

Two All-America Honorable Mention performances highlight the first night of competition for the Carnegie Mellon University men's swimming and diving team at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday, March 16 in Greensboro, N.C. at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Both freshmen Mitchell Riek (Sunland, Calif./Bishop Alemany) and Gabriel Bamforth (Cambridge, Mass./CRLS) competed on the first night of events in their first appearance at the NCAA Championships and both excelled in their respective events.

Riek earned his All-America Honorable Mention award when he won the consolation final of the 500-yard freestyle with a career-best time of 4:27.50. He narrowly made the championship final, touching in 4:29.33 in the preliminaries where he was .25 seconds off the cut. His final time was sixth best for the night.

Bamforth took flight on the 3-meter diving board making the top 16 with a score of 440.20 in the preliminaries. He closed the evening with a score of 416.30 to place 16th to become the first male diver All-American in Carnegie Mellon history.
